Description
Five spices for fragrant everyday cooking
BAM Asian Five Spices Blend brings together star anise, fennel, cloves, cinnamon and black pepper in a convenient seasoning for sweet and savoury dishes. Its warm, slightly sweet flavour makes it a useful choice when you want to give a simple meal a more aromatic character.
The blend suits cooks who enjoy exploring Asian-inspired recipes, as well as anyone looking for a new way to season familiar ingredients. Keep it close to hand for vegetable stir-fries, a bowl of rice or a roast chicken dinner. The combination is already prepared, so you can add the five spices together without measuring each one separately.
Ways to use your five-spice blend
- Stir a little into a marinade for pork, chicken or duck before cooking.
- Add to stir-fried vegetables and serve with rice or noodles.
- Try it with roasted carrots, squash or sweet potatoes for a warming side dish.
- Use in a rice dish alongside vegetables and your favourite protein.
For a simple meal idea, season chicken or tofu with a little of the blend and oil, then cook and serve with rice and vegetables. A squeeze of lime at the table can add a bright finishing touch. Start with a small amount of seasoning and adjust future batches to suit your taste.
A different direction for baking
The blend’s sweet spice character also works in cakes, waffles and pancakes. Try a little in an apple cake, fold it into pancake batter or use it to season fruit before baking. It is an easy way to experiment with a familiar recipe and discover how the same blend changes between sweet and savoury dishes.
