Description
One aromatic leaf, two ways to enjoy it
Domačija Butul Ground Bay Leaf gives a familiar kitchen herb a place in your teacup as well as your cooking. Made from dried, ground bay leaf, it can be steeped and strained for a herbal infusion or added sparingly to a dish as it cooks.
Its character is warm and distinctly herbal, with a lightly bitter freshness. Enjoying it as an infusion lets you explore bay on its own; using it in a recipe brings another aromatic layer to the ingredients around it.
How to prepare a bay leaf infusion
Follow Domačija Butul’s preparation guidance:
- Pour 200 ml of hot water over a small amount of ground bay leaf.
- Leave to infuse for 5–7 minutes.
- Strain thoroughly before serving.
Leaf & Spice serving idea: try the strained infusion plain first, then add a slice of lemon if you enjoy a citrus finish.
Ideas from the Leaf & Spice kitchen
For cooking, Butul recommends using the ground leaf sparingly and adjusting the quantity to the dish. These recipe ideas offer a few places to begin:
- Tomato and lentil stew: add a small amount while the lentils simmer with tomatoes, onion and carrots. Serve with bread for a satisfying lunch.
- A slow-cooked tomato sauce: introduce a little bay alongside garlic and olive oil, then spoon the finished sauce over pasta or baked aubergine.
- Potato and white bean soup: use it to season a warming pot of potatoes, beans and leeks. Taste before adding more so the other ingredients remain distinct.
- A lemon marinade: combine a little ground bay with olive oil, garlic and lemon zest for fish or chicken, then cook using your chosen recipe.
